About Art Audio

Based in Nottingham, the history of Art Audio goes back to 1987 when Tom Willis got together with two fellow engineers with a mutual Interest in HiFi.  The other two quickly dropped out but not before they had developed the “Quintet” and EL34 based valve amp that still has many followers around the world.  It speaks volumes for the quality of the Art Audio products that many of these original units are still used and loved 35 years later.  In fact, the classic Quintet is still available to special order.

Tom’s interest in valve amp started before the launch of the company in the 60s when he attended HiFi shows and heard products from some of the great manufacturers of the day, about the time of the initial launch of CDs and digital audio. Tom realised that the transistor amp of the time sounded really “Edgy, almost like cutting glass” but that the valve amps he was making took that edginess away and gave “Music again”, while still maintaining a full frequency response. At  that point he decided to concentrate on the production of high end valve systems.

The first valve amp Tom built was in 1986 when he made a GE design using an EL34 in push-pull mode.  He decided to make it work in triode mode, something that has become a hallmark of Art Audio’s push-pull designs.  The very first Quintet prototype was triode mode and this was demo’ed through a pair of Yamaha NS 1000’s, a notoriously revealing speaker and the sound was breath-taking.

When the company was in its infancy it had a great reputation for EL34 based amps but at that time single ended triode amps, many using the 300b valve were coming into vogue.  A number of dealers asked for an Art Audio product in this vein.  Tom’s reply was to produce the Diavolo, (meaning master), which quickly established itself as one of the best single ended triode amps, at any price, a position it still maintains today, decades later.

Today Art Audio has a great range of bespoke valve amps. From the 10 watt Diavolo to the 60 watt triode Maestro, from pre/power combinations to integrated amps,  Art Audio also produce the hugely acclaimed Vinyl One phono stage and a number of accessories.  After over 30 years, Art Audio now have the Composer turntables in their product line up too.  As Tom Willis said, “We have learned that an amplifier is more than just the sum of its parts”.  “It’s not just which parts you use, it’s where you put them and how you space them out to prevent interference and improve de-coupling”.    Art Audio’s philosophy is to keep the musicality in the music and to produce HiFi equipment that lets you listen to the music, not to the equipment.
